Hovertravel flies glasses for Sight for Wight
11/12/23
Sight for Wight, the Isle of Wight independent charity dedicated to providing information & support to visually impaired Islanders, has used Hovertravel to fly used glasses to the mainland to be sorted.
Lisa Hollyhead, CEO at Sight for Wight, explains: “This project is a real team effort across the Solent. Every optician on the Isle of Wight has joined Sight for Wight’s Glasses recycling scheme with bins in their stores to drop off pre-loved glasses. The first batch of 17 full bags were sorted by staff at Liz Earle and now students volunteering under the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, both on and off the island at various schools are sorting the next set.
Once all the glasses are sorted, we plan to sell the reading glasses (which can be sold over the counter) recycle the NHS prescription glasses overseas and sell the designer frames, having popped the lenses out, to be reused. The sheer volume of glasses collected since July when the scheme started is frightening, I am determined to ensure none end up in landfill.
And a huge thank you to Hovertravel who provided free freight to move the glasses between the island and the mainland.”
