Accessible Days Out - Ryde, Isle of Wight

Ryde is known as the Gateway to the Isle of Wight and has good transport links to other places around the Island. The town has miles of sandy beaches and promenades, making it popular with families and those with mobility issues.

We've picked a few of our favourite accessible days out on the Isle of Wight below, all within easy reach from Ryde.

  • Walk to Puckpool
  • Quarr Abbey
  • Isle of Wight Steam Railway

Ryde beach

Take off your shoes and walk along the sandy beaches to Puckpool. Or walk along The Esplanade where there are plenty of cafes and restaurants. Puckpool park was built as a mortar battery (HMS Medina) in the late 1880’s. It is now a community space that children love to explore. You’ll find a children’s play area, mini golf, crazy golf, tennis courts and cafes.

How to get here

Turn left out of Ryde terminal and keep walking! It’s about a mile long walk to Puckpool and the pathway all the way from Ryde hoverport is flat. It is not served by buses.

Our Tip

Puckpool Park is a great place to take a picnic. Walk up to the top of the battery for a large grassed area with a fantastic view over The Solent. The nearby pub, The Boathouse, has an accessible toilet.

Quarr Abbey logo

Quarr is a working monastery, home to a small group of Benedictine Monks. It is set in beautiful countryside between Ryde and Wootton Bridge, and is a favourite place for many to visit. Here you’ll find a tearooms, shop, visitor centre, squirrel hide and a piggery.

For further information ahead of your visit view Quarr Abbey's accessibility information.

How to get here

The Southern Vectis number 9 bus leaves Ryde Bus Station at frequent intervals. The bus stops opposite the drive up to the Abbey.

Our Tip

If the weather’s fine sit and have a cuppa in the café’s beautiful garden and see and hear many garden birds.

Isle of Wight steam railway logo

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway is hugely popular with everyone who visits. Not only can you have a ride on a train, you can also visit the workshop, the museum, the shop, the café, and the falconry. Take a walk through the woodlands or visit the children’s play area.

For further information ahead of your visit view The Isle of Wight Steam Railway accessibility information.

How to get there

Catch the Island Line train from Ryde Esplanade station a short walk from the Ryde terminal to Smallbrook Junction. Alight here and wait for the steam train to arrive. Plan ahead and view the Isle of Wight Steam Railway timetable and Island Line timetable to ensure good connectivity.

Alternatively, catch the Southern Vectis number 9 bus (going via Staplers Road) to Newport. The bus stops outside Wootton Station.
